Do I need the U-Band for my male dog?

For most male dogs, the conventional belly band fits in front of the hind legs, behind the penis.

U-Band is needed on harness
On 20-25 percent of male dogs, the tip of their penis starts farther back between their legs. The U-band shape provides an easy opening so they can urinate freely.

U-Band is needed for harness.

Please choose from the dropdown menu below if your dog needs the UBand.

*Female Dogs – Please choose “no uband needed”

This assistive harness is worth every penny. It’s thoughtfully designed, made with high-quality durable hardware, and comes with very clear instructions that use color photos printed on card stock. It has made life easier for our senior dog, who has poorly-formed front legs and is losing feeling in his back left leg.

Hello J, thank you for your question. We find that most of our clients leave the Help Em Up Harness on throughout the day and then take it off at night. This gives you the ability to quickly help your dog throughout the day as needed. The Help Em Up Harness is also designed to work in conjunction with our wheelchairs.

Neither males or females have problems defecating with the dog harness – as the support straps that come up between their hind legs are held apart by the dogs tail, giving consistent clearance for defecation. Female dogs have no urinating issues for the same reason. Most male dogs can use the conventional harness without issue, as their penis generally will come out in front of the belly band – giving them good clearance to urinate.

    Hold Em Up Harness Awesomeness

    Scott Wiggins

In October 2021, we almost put down our 15-year old yellow lab Jack because he could no longer get up on his own at times. His back legs were terribly weak, although he could maintain uprightness once lifted into position there. The “Hold em Harness” was a Godsend in this regard and allowed us to have another half a year with him. Sadly, he went into seizures on April 13, 2022 and passed over that same day.

We became foster parens to a 5-month old lab mix puppy a week after our Jack died. In a sling recovering from rotator cuff surgery, I only had one good arm to lift with. We accordingly once again have turned to the “Hold em Up” harness, which allows me to lift the puppy into my truck with a single arm and hand.

The “Hold em Up” Harness is simply a brilliant appliance and is as valuable to a struggling dog as it is to a struggling owner. 5 Stars!

This is a very well-made product. You can tell a lot of thought and development went into its making. I would recommend this product if you have a bigger older dog who is having issues getting up and down stairs or up. It is a bit on the heavier side so not sure my dog digs that but she is getting used to it. We do not put it on her every day or every walk etc. Just, at this point, when we feel she is having a rough day. She is a chow retriever mix and weighs 90 pounds,

We had bought the lift them up harness for our 11 year old male dane. I wanted to thank your company for such a good product. Our Dane loved wearing it, I believe it acted as a support emotionally as well as physically for him. I left it on him so we could help lift him up whenever he got into trouble. His hind end was giving out due to old nerves. I am contacted you to say how much we loved the product and it was exactly what we needed to help our elderly Dane.

    Works great!

    Kristi A Grinde (verified owner)

I will say that you have to really pay close attention to the photos in the instructions, and potentially you may have to watch a YouTube video or two, but once you figure it out, it’s really easy. I have had to use it on my 150 lb. Saint Bernard after she was put on a medication that makes her really wobbly on her feet. It *really* helps me get her up, steady her when she’s eating / drinking / walking and other activities. I wasn’t sure that this would be as good or better than what you see on Amazon and the like, but it’s worth every penny!

Our dog dislocated his hip and also has a degenerative spine issue and things were so hard for all of us trying to care for him. The help ‘em up harness has truly been a lifesaver in so many ways. We had a sling that was not working at all and our dog wasn’t even trying to walk with it because we think it hurt his belly. He would pee on it every time he went out and all over himself. We were beside ourselves and not sure what to do. Then, the vet recommended this and it was a total game changer for us. Our dog took to it right away and has been walking with help, potty is no problem and he is much more comfortable. It used to take two people to get him outside safely and now just one of us can take him out. We cannot thank you enough!

This is a lifesaver (backsaver for me) and I wish I had purchased years ago. My rescued Senior Goldens have all experienced deterioration of their hind legs, making walking a challenge. The rear end only helpers have not worked well for me, too much slippage. This products allows me to haul them back up to their feet, easy peasy.
I am a senior female weighing 120 lbs and have no issues picking up my 100 lb retriever.

    Harness for Older Lab

Wonderful product. Purchased for older male lab after having spleen and tumor removed. He had arthritis in his back and then received a spider bite leaving him with an infected abcess in the groin area and was too weak to stand up on rear legs. This harness was our savior to lift him to go outside for bathroom and sunshine. Made effort less painful for him and much easier on us knowing it didn’t cause pain for him.

This product is so helpful for both the humans and the dog. Our 15 year old Old English Sheepdog has osteoarthritis and is unable to get up unassisted. We tried a sling for his hind legs which was very awkward as only his backend gets supported. The harness makes helping him (he weighs 75 lbs) so much easier and he remains comfortable during the process.I highly recommend this product for any dog with hind leg mobility issues.

    Essential for our old girl

    Krista Schumacher (verified owner)

This harness is a lifesaver. Our old girl, a large rottweiler/shepherd mix, has bad osteoarthritis in her knees and seems to be deteriorating by the day. But she’s still a happy dog, loves to join the other pups and me on short walks, wags her tail, and gobbles down her food. She needs considerable help getting up and down from soft beds and can’t get on our bed, even with the extra-long and wide ramp we bought. She’s 75 lbs, and we’re able to lift her easily with this harness. She even wags her tail when my husband lifts her from the floor onto our bed. I don’t know what we’d do without this harness.

She is 85 lbs so moving her is tricky. This is a god=send for us. Size chart is spot on and its easy to get on and off. We purchased this harness pending surgery for a torn ACL. It fits beautifully and we tried it out to find that it really makes lifting easier. Unfortunately we wont be using it for the ACL repair, but may need it for other things. Hubby and I are getting older and it has been a workout getting our doggie in and out of the car. This will definitely safe him some pain and us some pain too!

My boy is nearing the end of his journey and is probably suffering from myelopathy. He is still walking but not well. After only one time, he knows the harness means we’re going for a walk. It’s much needed support when he needs it. It fits him well although I had to make a lot of adjustments. The chest fit him perfectly but he must have a small butt. Once I got it right it’s easy on easy off. It suits us both. It allows me to give him a quality of life as long as possible and that is most important to me. Thank you for your product.

This harness is wonderful as it does not need to be removed for the dog to urinate. Game changer! Only caution is that the weight outlined was not correct for my dog. He required a smaller size to fit well and he was not on the border of the weight requirements. Something to consider. Otherwise, so grateful for this product while my big guy recovers from IVDD.

We were at a loss how to help our Great Pyr following his second knee surgery. Our vet recommended this product, allowing us to help get our boy up from a “Sit” position – it was wonderful, and really did improve his recovery. Later we found that a strap on the chest strap had torn – we contacted the company, and found that there is a one-year warranty on the product. They quickly sent a replacement. Kudos to a company that has a great product AND honors the warranty!

I purchased this harness for my 13 year old Redbone Coonhound mix. His hips are going & he has neurological issues, so he’s losing control of his back legs & paws. The harness is a huge help with getting him in & out of the car, straightening his stance and getting him up & down the stairs to the back yard (which he still is determined to use). Easy to adjust and to take on & off. He seems completely comfortable in it. Question though, the straps that come between his back legs ride up the middle, which can be a problem when he has to poop. Have I adjusted something incorrectly? May just be that he has a skinny butt. :-)

We recently purchased this harness to assist our English Setter who has hip dysplasia. It is a little intimidating at first with all the straps and buckles, but once we figured everything out, it was great. Worst case scenario, the pet can be carried by its harness. It helps him to stand and can take most, or all the weight off his hind legs. He adapted to the feel quickly and does not seem bothered by it at all. On his bad days, we use it to lift him into the car or onto our bed. Would definitely purchase again.

Extremely thoughtfully designed and well made. Our 13 y/o 50-lb English Shepherd he’d a sudden episode of vestibular syndrome. She was comfortable and safe in her harness. Easy on and off. It also became an important tool in her home physical therapy.

We just picked our Major from extensive back surgery. He is a 90lb+ dog and this harness made the transition from the hospital/car/home ( up 2 sets of stairs), so much easier for us and Major. Can’t imagine how difficult this process would have been without it.

24 hour update: Major had to relieve himself in our 90 x 90 dog run at 2am w snow/ice everywhere. There is no way he nor me could of managed that without our new harness

My vet recommended this product to me. My almost 17-year old large breed dog is having trouble getting up in the morning and going up and down the few steps to leave our house. He fell twice and inured himself, even though we tried to assist him up and down the steps. This product has been fabulous. Now we easily assist him up and down the steps. He senses that, and he has less anxiety about steps. No new falls. I’d highly recommend this product.

Saved us from a bad fall

I wanted to leave a review because I just found myself recommending this harness to a friend. I have since lost the dog I purchased this for, he was a Doberman (33″ at the withers!) who ended up losing his back end to lumbosacral spinal stenosis (the nerves that make the back legs move started to fail). He was a huge dog and I am a tiny woman, and we lived in a 2 story house with old, narrow stairs. I bought the harness proactively, foreseeing trouble on the horizon. I’m so grateful I did. We had to help him down the stairs and having the handle on his pelvis really helped. I could hold him and the railing at the same time and we did well for months. My then fiance one night took a bad spill down the stairs with the dog and I feared we would have to leave him in the living room to sleep downstairs. I should have given into that, but didn’t want him to be alone. One morning soon after the dog refused to go down the stairs because he had no confidence that he wouldn’t fall. I really felt for him. By then we had been using this harness daily for walks and lifting support, but this was the real test I had bought the thing for: we were stuck upstairs and I could not carry this dog down. Enter the shoulder strap, which basically turned him into a 4-legged duffel bag. I’m lucky he trusted me and wasn’t a squirmy dog. I needed both feet for the stairs and both hands for the walls and my poor old dog dangled nervously from the shoulder strap. It was a tense few minutes but we got down safe without any mishaps and I could have cried I was so grateful to have had this thing on hand when I needed it. When we finally had to put the dog down I gave the harness away, but I will probably own one for every dog we have as they enter seniorhood. As long as the quality of this product never degrades, they will have a lifelong customer in me. I cannot recommend this product enough. Thank you, Helpemup Harness, you guys really did me a solid in the making of this product.

I have a 12 year old German Sheppard that needed to get to the vet. Unfortunately his back legs were not allowing him to get into the car. I tried a couple of other solutions including ramps with no luck. I was able to get this harness shipped overnight and was able to try it out on him the night before the appointment so he would get used to it. The next morning I was able to get him hoisted in the car on the first attempt. At 120 pounds that was was quite an accomplishment. My vet had positive comments about the harness and that it even helped them with the exam.

I don’t think I would have been able to get him to the vet without this harness. Thanks again.

Thank you for reaching out to us.

We do not recommend the use of bleach or other harsh detergents but mild soaps work great. Urine odor can be a problem so try to clean regularly. White vinegar and water in a 1 to 3 ratio works pretty well to cut the smell. There are also commercial cleaners available that can help to cut odor.

My vet & assistant highly recommended this for my German shepherd which has degenerative joint disease. It’s very painful for him to walk & you need to help him get up from a thing down position. This type of harness is comfortable, doable & does not pinch the skin, or entangle in his fur. The Help ‘em up harness is Easy to put on and to lift him up absolutely wonderful making this the greatest product ever!! 🙋‍♀️

    AMAZING!
Just wanted to share how great this has been for our 12.5 year old mixed breed with hip dysplasia and arthritis. It was a last ditch effort to help keep him mobile and it has been wonderful for him. (I had even inquired about the return policy because I wasn’t sure he was going to make it until we got the item) He’s been so happy too, complete with a wagging tail that we hadn’t seen in a few weeks. It has been well worth the price tag and I would highly recommend.
